You take the Dutch car theory exam (rijbewijs B) at the CBR. Since 7 April 2025 it is one continuous exam of 50 questions; you pass with at least 44 correct within 30 minutes. You book it yourself on mijn.cbr.nl with a DigiD. With Rijcoach, the online theory course is included free with every lesson package — and you can take the exam in English.

How to book your theory exam
You arrange the theory exam yourself with the CBR — online, choosing your own date and test centre. In our region most learners use CBR Haarlem (Professor Eijkmanlaan 2-4).
- Request a DigiD via digid.nl (you need a BSN as an expat)
- Log in to mijn.cbr.nl with your DigiD
- Choose the English exam, a date and a test centre
- Pay and confirm — the CBR fee is €50.50 (2026)
Start your theory early — ideally before or alongside your first driving lessons. You'll understand the practical lessons faster and can plan your driving lessons and practical exam sooner.

Questions
Can I take the theory exam in English?+
Yes. The CBR offers the car theory exam in English. The format is the same: 50 questions, at least 44 correct within 30 minutes.
How many questions are there now?+
Since 7 April 2025 the exam is one continuous test of 50 questions (previously 65 in three parts). You have 30 minutes in total.
What does it cost?+
The CBR fee for the theory exam is €50.50 in 2026 for the Dutch exam; the English exam costs a little more. Any instructor/course costs are separate.
How long is my theory certificate valid?+
A pass is valid for 1.5 years (18 months) from the day you pass. You must pass your practical exam within that period.
Do I need a DigiD to book?+
Yes. You log in to mijn.cbr.nl with a DigiD. If you don't have one yet, request it via digid.nl first. As an expat you can apply for a DigiD once you have a BSN.
Is the theory course included with Rijcoach?+
Yes. The online theory course (iTheorie) is included free with every lesson package, so you practise automatically in the new exam format.
