Learning to drive in the Netherlands as an expat
The questions expats ask us most — about the theory exam in English, exchanging a foreign licence, automatic vs manual, lessons needed and costs.
Do I need to speak Dutch to get a driving licence?+
No. You can take the official CBR theory exam in English, and our instructors teach in English. The practical exam itself uses simple, standard instructions that we prepare you for.
Can I exchange my foreign driving licence instead?+
Sometimes. Holders of an EU/EEA licence — and a limited list of designated countries — can exchange without re-taking the exam. Most expats from outside that list need a Dutch licence. Check your situation on rijksoverheid.nl; we're happy to advise during your trial lesson.
Should I learn manual or automatic?+
Automatic is faster to learn and increasingly common — a great fit if you mainly want freedom to drive. Manual gives you a licence valid for every car. Many expats choose automatic; see our automatic-lessons page.
How many lessons will I need?+
On average our students need 35–38 lessons (national average is 42–43). After your Trial lesson we give you an honest, personal estimate.
Do you pick me up?+
Yes — we cover Heemstede, Haarlem, Aerdenhout, Bloemendaal, Bennebroek, Hoofddorp and Zandvoort: the wider South Kennemerland region.
How do I schedule my driving lessons?+
After your request, you receive direct access to the student app and a group chat with your dedicated Rijcoach. After the trial lesson, choose a package and schedule lessons through the app, calendar or group chat.
What if I need to cancel a lesson?+
You can cancel or reschedule a lesson free of charge up to 48 hours in advance by contacting your instructor. Lessons cancelled less than 48 hours in advance are charged in full.
What does it cost and how do I pay?+
All-in packages start at €2,295, with lessons, i-Theory, the CBR interim test and the exam included. You can pay in 3 instalments via iDEAL or Apple Pay.
